Webinar on Managing Fiscal Risks in the Middle East and North Africa

The International Monetary Fund’s Middle East Center for Economics and Finance (IMF-CEF), Fiscal Affairs Department (FAD), and Middle East and Central Asia Department (MCD) held a joint webinar titled "Managing Fiscal Risks in the Middle East and North Africa" on January 23rd, 2024. Paulo Drummond, Director at the CEF, delivered opening remarks at the beginning of the event, which was moderated by Rashid Sbia, Sr. Economist at the CEF. The speakers, Jacques Charaoui and Mahmoud Harb, gave a presentation describing the sources of fiscal risks in MENA countries, and highlighted the efforts deployed by governments in the region to strengthen their capacity to analyze and manage fiscal risks. The speakers also discussed the steps needed to enhance fiscal risk identification, analysis, and management in the region. They noted that fiscal risks cannot be fully eliminated but better awareness and stronger management would reduce fiscal slippages and support long-term economic development. A Q&A session concluded the event which was with attended by a diverse audience including public sector officials, academics, and representatives of the business community, civil society, and other international organizations.
