Webinar on IMF's Regional Economic Outlook for MENA: Navigating the Evolving Geoeconomic Landscape
December 18, 2024
The International Monetary Fund-Middle East Center for Economics and Finance (IMF-CEF) and the IMF’s Middle East and Central Asia Department (MCD) held a joint webinar titled “IMF’s Regional Economic Outlook for MENA: Navigating the Evolving Geoeconomic Landscape" on Wednesday, December 18, 2024. Mr. Paulo Drummond, Director of the CEF, delivered opening remarks, and Mr. Moez Souissi, Deputy Director of the CEF, moderated the event.
Mr. Apostolos Apostolou, Economist at MCD, presented recent economic developments in the MENA region and key risks to the outlook amid heightened uncertainty, stemming from escalating conflicts, growing geoeconomic fragmentation, and subdued oil production. Mr. Troy Matheson, Senior Economist at MCD, delved into challenges such as weak medium-term growth prospects and discussed the decisive reforms needed to reverse these dynamics. Mr. Bilal Tabti, Economist at MCD, discussed how advancing financial development through policies that foster competition, reduce the dominance of state-owned banks, and broaden the investor base can promote higher growth and greater inclusion.
The floor then opened for a discussion during the Q&A session with a diverse audience from the Arab world, comprised of public sector officials, academics, and representatives of the business community, civil society, and other international organizations.
