As external shocks become more frequent for the Middle East and North Africa region, an increasingly important policy question is how policy frameworks and policy mixes can help economies better withstand these shocks. Drawing on empirical analysis and model-based scenarios, this research finds that as countries diversify exports and deepen financial markets, credible inflation targeting with greater exchange rate flexibility could enable faster adjustment. It also finds that robust fiscal rules can help anchor long-term expectations, lower risk premiums, and create space for countercyclical fiscal responses. Overall, the findings underscore the importance of resilient, flexible, and well-anchored macroeconomic policy frameworks in enhancing economic resilience to external shocks. |
A discussion and Q&A session will follow the presentation.
