PRESS RELEASE
Tuesday November 11, 2025
The IMF–Middle East Center for Economics and Finance (IMF-CEF), jointly with the Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA), co-led a high-level event titled “Institutions for Growth and Development in the Arab World.” This hybrid event brought together eminent speakers and a diverse audience, including senior policymakers and representatives from the public and private sectors, civil society, international and regional organizations, the media, and the diplomatic community.
Dr. Sami Ben Naceur, Director of the IMF-CEF, delivered the opening remarks, highlighting the importance of fostering an open dialogue on institutional reforms to support inclusive and sustainable development throughout the Arab world.
The seminar was moderated by Dr. Oussama Kanaan from the IMF’s Institute for Capacity Development. It featured presentations that provided a political economy perspective on key challenges and lessons learned from Dr. Adeel Malik of the University of Oxford; an appraisal of economic challenges facing the Arab region from Dr. Mohamed Maait, IMF Executive Director representing Arab countries and the Maldives; and global perspectives from Mr. Christoph Duenwald based on his experience covering post-conflict countries at the IMF. These presentations were followed by a panel discussion and a rich interaction with the audience that further explored these themes.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Kanaan overviewed the seminar’s policy conclusions and thanked the KIA for partnering in the organization of this timely event with the IMF-CEF. He expressed his appreciation to the speakers and participants for their valuable contributions and the engaging discussions.
